My currency desktop gadget is around 26.2 which of course is not reflected by local exchange rates. It's dropped over half a baht in 2 days. Prompted we to check it. AUD has dipped sharply in 48 hours, 34.95 vs 36.5 Weds AM. The US Dollar dropped about 1 peso, 43.95 vs 45.0, 7 days ago. A stronger peso is seen as good for local prices. Overall prices should drift downwards, which is hard to judge, but at least they don't spike upwards. We also have the lower oil price which has seen quite dramatic drops in petrol, deisel, and bottle gas. The US Dollar trades quite well on the black market, the AUD less so, but definitely above.

I said back on January 18 on this thread that I dropped my budgeting back to 34Php and since then I have looked at the arguments for the $AUD dropping from $AUD0.80 to $0.70 and figured I best start looking at the lower.
For safety sake so that I do not over commit.
Going from $0.80 to $0.70 represents a drop of 12.5% so from about 36Php less 12.5% means I should budget for about 31Php and have changed my budgets accordingly starting in February running through until end of June when I have dropped it again to 30Php to the $AUD.
Just what I do.

I was ready to put an inheritance of $160k AUD into a condominium here in Thailand 4 months ago. I then watched it slide ..and slide some more; from 30.4 baht down to 25.29 baht where it is now. A difference of more than 700,000 baht to me It hurts. Now I will just hold out and watch what happens. Dreams on hold

I'd not move that sort of money into Thailand at the moment, hard to say what will happen to the rate, maybe when the tourism losses start to bite the baht will drop. Look at a long term lease maybe, use the invested inheritance to pay it.

You can only buy apartments anyway. No reason why it should not resell as long as it's in a popular farang area, Thais aren't keen on buying second hand houses or apartments.

The reserve bank would like our A$1 at US$.75 so only time will tell Only 2c more and they're there then. But after that, thren what? Anyway, I'm still ready to buy, I think. I will accept the exchange loss and just buy if I see something I really like. I can't go on agonising about it any longer. After all, I'm buying for a lifestyle choice, not for investment. And in terms of worldwide prices, Thailand is still pretty cheap. I've never owned anything more than an old car worth a few thousand at best. So I'm quite excited about owning my own place here.

You might like to give Zorro a PM, he bought an apartment in Bangkok, he may have a few tips on what to watch out for. He seems quite happy with his.
