Hi there, We are approaching retirement age and I am researching countries to live in that offer a decent standard of living and health care. I have noticed Portugal seems to offer both at this stage. Have any of you thought of moving there at all?
From what I can work out the average wage is approx 500-900 Euro a month and the Aged Pension for two is 1700 Euro a month, rent is about 350-500 Euro a month. This is an interesting prospect for us.
Having very good medical facilites is imperative for us. Please let's know if any of you have had any thoughts of moving to Europe at any stage and what and why you made the decisions you did.

The passport situation would preclude me from going to an EU type country plus it would be too far from Australia for family convenience.
But if it suits you and you can go there go for it.

I have not.
But during my years in Saudi Portugal became a haven for Scandinavians who wanted a place that wasn't overrun by British expats. It suited higher income types who would typically buy property to build or in many cases restore old buildings, farmhouses, windmills and such. And many of them played golf. And it's the home of good wine and food, but not for those on a budget.
I can see arguments for and against. But on the basic OAP you quote, you will be on the lower side of the income bracket. Health care is probably excellent, but you won't have applicable insurance. Flights back home will be long and expensive. If it's me I go to NZ before I go to anywhere in Europe.
Better go there for a 2 week holiday first, it might be fun.
