Mum pocketed $75kA MARRIED Whittington woman, who ripped-off the Commonweath to the tune of $75,000 in unentitled benefits by claiming she was single, will be sentenced tomorrow. Yana Mifsud, 30, of Wilsons Rd, pleaded guilty in Geelong County Court yesterday to two counts of defrauding the Commonwealth. Crown prosecutor Matthew Phillips said over a five-year period between 2003 and 2008 Mifsud repeatedly claimed higher, and unentitled, benefits by stating she was single. He said the claims involved Newstart payments and, following the birth of her first child and subsequent children, parenting and family tax payments. Judge McInerney said it was a farce that a Commonwealth body such as Centrelink, which had within its resources the ability to detect that Mifsud was married, had failed to do so and it had been left to a member of the public to break the news.www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2011/06/09/262581_news.html

A "GREEDY" Whittington mother-of-four who ripped off Centrelink to the tune of $75,000 has avoided jail. Yana Mifsud was released on a three-year good behaviour bond and had her 24-month prison term suspended for that period in the County Court yesterday. Over a five-year period, between 2003 and 2008, Mifsud repeatedly claimed higher and unentitled benefits by stating she was single. Judge Michael McInerney dubbed her offending as "heinous". "This is not a need offence, this is a greed offence," he said. "The only reason it stopped was a tip off from the public. "This is an offence committed against he whole community and it's hard to detect. The community and department relies on the honesty of people seeking those payments."
