Hi,
I found this forum and hope that someone can help me please.
I am terminally ill and from my understanding have already been assessed and approved for unlimited portability under the DSP as a result of my terminal illness. This was supposed to have been done automatically when I was assessed initially for DSP as I was terminal upon application. I had thought this was a septate application by a DHS officer from the portability section confirmed it. Either way my question is as follows.
According to the reading that I have done on portability and terminally ill DSP recipients, unlimited portability is granted in the case of the recipient moving permanently overseas to place of origin or to be close or near to family.
I notice that for DSP recipients with no future work capacity do not have this condition imposed.
Is my understanding correct? So, as a terminally ill I cannot be paid under the unlimited portability if my absence overseas is not permanent or to be with family? So, if I was planning a trip overseas as a holiday (assuming dying people are allowed those?) for more than 4 weeks would I be denied portability? Is that not discriminatory in a sense. Surely a dying person has the right to some leisure! Sure, I'm greatful for the help the government (tax payer) provides but seriously why is it either or. I mean WHY do I have to leave Australia permanently to place of origin (born here, does that mean parents origin) to qualify for DSP UP.
I would have loved to take an extended holiday before I'm supposed to wither and die, but it looks as if I'm stuck in Australia...
I hope for some clarification and hope I'm just misunderstanding it all.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum Josh.
Have you actually discussed this with anyone? Centrelink or Wefare/Basic Rights in your home state?
My take would be to tell them that your absence will be permanent then come back when you feel like it.
Ring Centrelink International Services 131 673 and tell them you want to apply for portability on the grounds of terminal illness and ask a few of the questions that you have here.
Get back to us when you have their reply please.

Put it this way, I don't think they are going to query you to much about family and I don't know if you have to tell them who your family is. All the best.
