If I go back to Australia next year is my full payment reinstated and does it then then continue for 6 weeks on my leaving again?

This is all I've come up with to date but I'll call CIS early tomorrow. Who knows, it may depend on what you put on your arrival card. You may need to provide proof of residency with an intention to stay (see below) Lets see what tomorrow brings. If you got sick and came back I doubt they would let you go untreated, probably back date your application or even send you a bill.
If you have it cancelled though then you have to reapply and say you intend to remain a resident.

I don't understand the medicare part. For the five years i have been on U.P. I have returned for around a month every year and have had no problems being covered by it to see doctors or even community health care dentists when emergencies came up by chance. Two teeth out last year from abcyss and the usual $20.00 only. So do I need to worry on my next visit?

nomadic I think Banjo has asked us a trick question! lol CIS have just told me if you return temporarily your pay stays the same as it is OS. But you would know that from your own monthly returns every year. Those returns are what appears to keep your Medicare up to date mate. The proof of residence requirement (not that you intend to remain a resident) is if you as a citizen haven't returned for 5 years continuously, then to re-enrol you have to provide it direct to Medicare, not Centrelink. If you are a permanent resident you have to re-enrol after 1 years absence. Funny how Medicare can still distinguish between the two. www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/enablers/medicare-enrolment-returning-residentsBanjo if you really want to get the full pension back and have it continue on leaving, the only possible way I can see would be to put on your Arrival Card (a legal document) that you are a resident returning permanently and intend to remain in Australia for 12 months then contact the office, get reinstated, do a bunk and open up a world of trouble. Seriously, a quick in and out should keep your Medicare up to speed, remind you of the old days as well as why you wanted out in the first place. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Cheers bear  |

thanks bear. it has been aknowledged by them that i am an australian resident only and that will not change no matter how long i stay away. that was cleared up early on or else i would be a stateless person because i can only stay 3 months at a time in these countries. cheers.

Im going back to Oz in March for 2 weeks
I will try to get a temporary Health card
Also i had not changed my address when i left Oz to my X family home
So i will have to ring Medicare to change this
I will also ask if my card id till valid
plus for how long
after i return back to overseas
i will keep you posted
As we all need this Information

Hi bedwin, two years ago i got a new health care card after i got back and it is valid for 3 years till 2018. As said before I have never had a problem getting a card or with medicare for 17 years. Just roll up to an office and they should give you a hand written one immediately to use until you get the proper one in the mail. I have done that a few times. Medicare have always sent me out a new card to my oz address when the old one expires without ever having to contact them. I am also going back in March and I will give you a call to see if we can meet up in CNX as if all goes to plan I hope to be there for a night or two around Feb 5th.

Bedwin, as bear's research indicates, there's only a problem with Medicare if you stay outside Aus for a five year block. Coming back periodically (or occasionally) is what keeps your Medicare status live.
Sounds like it's the same scenario for you, nomadic.
No one's going to have a Medicare issue unless they stay away for a five year block.

murphy I think it's more about a man date thing in Chiang mai than the real issue...Medicare. lol I haven't forgotten Bedwin, I'll PM you with dates late March. It'll be good to meet up.
