Hi Guys,
I am on DSP.
I am planning on moving to Vietnam.
I know that I only get paid 4 weeks DSP every 12 months for overseas travel... however...
I am wondering how I can move to Vietnam and not get kicked off DSP completely... to avoid having to re-apply for DSP if I decide to return to Australia.
Is it true that I will be kept on DSP as long as I return to Australia every 13 weeks?
Do I only need to fly in to Australia at the end of that 13 weeks... then I can fly straight out again... and my next 13 weeks starts all over again?
Thanks so much for your consideration. It is all so confusing!

Basically, if you spend too much time away without Unlimited Portability Centrelink will declare you a non-resident and the DSP is a residency based payment.
The rules are that you can have 4 weeks away paid, and up to 13 weeks unpaid in a calendar year. If you overstay this period you'll lose the DSP and have to reapply, with a reassessment, on return to Australia.
To live overseas you have to apply for Unlimited/Indefinite Portability and undergo a reassessment. Ring Centrelink for the paperwork and talk it through with a doctor.

The 4 weeks paid are per ‘rolling year’.
A ‘rolling year’ enables c-link to swindle the unwary .. and requires very careful planning of annual holidays otherwise will not be receiving 28 days paid.
Banjo, are you sure the 13 weeks unpaid are also restricted to per year ?

It's run on a calendar year? (I thought it was a rolling 12 months...)

Hippy, I've seen reference to the 13 weeks unpaid per 12 months, but damned if I can find a link.
It's gotten so you have to ring Centrelink international.

Scott, International Services number is 131 673. Don't call the DSP number as they won't be able to help you.

or 'rolling 365 days' which started in 2015 .. book your second year (2016) holiday at less than rolling 365 days and go unpaid .. then in the third year (2017) take holiday at less than rolling 365 days and only receive paid days as a pro-rata.
The 13 weeks is the suspension period before cancellation .. any reason why there would be years total of 13 weeks suspension ? would seem unlikely.

Hippy, I'm not quite sure what you mean..."any reason why there would be years total of 13 weeks suspension ?"
And yep, it is 365 days, not twelve months. These things might seem insignificant, Scott, but sadly people have found out the hard way they're not.
Centrelink International have been (mostly) pretty helpful to our members. They're a different breed to other areas of Centrelink. Give them a bell, and also get the UP docs Banjo mentioned.

It is all so confusing! You must not loose your residency status in Australia,, That is a condition of receiving DSP,, payed or not. Seems like you need to look into Portability. Other folk on the page will be more help.

Scott, Just to clarify even more : in the old days you could go overseas and stay 13 weeks, then return for a day, call Centrelink to "check in", then go O/S for another 13 weeks.
Those days are gone now.
Look at the info regarding "Portability" on this website. That is the path for you to explore, and the way forward for you.
