I have been Googling around for an answer and finally stumbled across this forum. Hopefully someone here can help. I'm sorry if I am in the wrong category but I couldn't figure out where this question belongs.
So I am a carer and recieving carer payment. Next year I am planning on going overseas. I know you get a 6 week allowance for overseas travel where you still recieve payments which is 42 days. So the itinerary I have is 42 days but because of time zone the day I land into the country is the next day making it 43 days. I have twice enquired about whether the day you arrive back is considered still being overseas. They both said the day you arrive back is not counted but these same people gave me conflicting information on the day you leave. One said the day you leave is counted and the other said it is also not counted so I am not sure if I should trust the information on the arrive back day.
I hope someone here can clarify the situation and any help would be appreciated.

Hi Sarah, the day you return counts if you're on the DSP, not sure about carers. Here's the guide to Social Security Law on the issue. Carer travels overseas WITH care receiver
The carer may continue to be paid CP when travelling overseas with the care receiver provided:
the absence is temporary, AND the period overseas does not exceed 6 weeks, AND they continue to provide constant care.
If the period of overseas absence exceeds the allowed portability period (7.1.2.20) CP will be stopped (unless travelling in an agreement country which covers CP).
Note: A person receiving CP travelling or living outside Australia for more than the allowed portability period may be eligible to continue to receive payment under an international social security agreement. Several international agreements include CP. Refer to Part 10 for information on which agreements include CP and the conditions under which a person may be paid.
Note: Care receivers on income support payments will also need to comply with portability rules (see policy reference below).
Act reference: SSAct section 198AB Care not required to be in private residence during portability period
Policy reference: SS Guide 7.1 Conditions for Payment Outside Australia, 7.1.2.20 Application of Portability Rules (Portability Table), 7.2 Arrangements for Payment Outside Australia, 7.1.1.20 Summary of Portability under International Social Security Agreements guides.dss.gov.au/guide-social-security-law/3/6/4/80

G'day Sarah, welcome to the forum.
As Banjo said,"Not sure about carers." But for DSP, the day of both departure and arrival are counted, essentially taking two days off of allowable portability.
11.59 pm departure counted, 00.05 am arrival counted. Cheers bear.

Nothing to do with when your plane leaves nor arrives.

Welcome Sara also; to the world of madness. What happens if flight gets delayed on return trip? Due in at 20.00 so time to get through immigration before midnight but delayed for 4 hours. Is clink mean enough to dock you? Then waste taxpayer money with your appeal to the AAT etc ? YES i suspect. And as usual your clink inquiries got different answers from different imbeciles.
