How many years back can a FOI request go? I'm trying to help someone find information about a debt centrelink raised for overpaying... apparently payments were made both here and into a NZ bank account in the late 90s. The debt was repaid but apparently they cannot give any details of the NZ account the payments were made to.
Would an FOI request help at all?

My belief tasjo is information goes back to the beginning of time, to your very first encounter the "DSS"-"CES" combo when they generated your unique i.d:- CRN XXX-XXX-(upper case letter). Some new recipients may have already started getting "W"or"X". Mine is a "V" and I entered the system at sixteen after paying tax for two years. Some tech will go to the appropriate storage, download the personal file and send it off to be reviewed/redacted or both, but yeah, they'll have it. Cheers bear

I believe that you should be able to get information from the NZ bank account As this will give to the evidence you need it may take a while to retrieve the information

You can make an FOI request for a specific period, if you asked for 1995-1999 it would cover the time of the payments, if they're not there, no harm done, and you could move on to the probably more expensive option of asking the bank for statements from that era.
