Former Hawke Minister Susan Ryan.
....the most detailed set of commitments to Australian women ever developed. We delivered on virtually all of them. A lot were highly controversial and not widely popular.
At that time, it was not unlawful to sack women who married or became pregnant, or just because they were women. Maternity leave was scarcely available. Women could not get home loans. Girls’ education was restricted and fewer girls got into higher education. Much of our community thought all of this was OK.
Correcting it was hard and contentious. As Bob’s minister assisting on the status of women, I was able to rely on his active support through political controversies, media storms and infights against constant wicked misrepresentation by virulent conservatives.
With Bob’s leadership we secured landmark laws and policies, including the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, today still effectively protecting women from all kinds of discrimination especially in the workplace, including sexual harassment.
Vale Bob Hawke

Current political commentator Bear
Unfortunately Susan with the good also comes the bad. I'm particularly happy about how the status of women was raised. However I wish to also mention the issues below.
It’s the point where the wage share of national income began to decline, Real Unit Labour Costs began to fall (making labour cheaper), it was the end of free tertiary education, and the point where we began matching deficit spending with bond issuance (this wasn’t done before)
Bob was also correctly outed as the main US CIA agent in Australia by the 26 rebel unions of the Victorian Trades Hall Council in the early seventies. The bastard was responsible for the "Accord"' with the traitors Halfpenny and Carmichael which brought down unions and paved the way for neo-liberalism.
He brought in the Australia Act (still Unlawful) without a referendum of the Australian people. It has been said this was tantamount to Treason and Treachery. But therein lies the two edged sword of politics, trying to keep everyone happy and fulfill your agenda.
Nonetheless Bob, you were an Icon, Dinky Di & True Blue, as my dear ol' dad used to say. If Labor wins tomorrow I may even attempt a "Hawkie" on a bia chang lek to honour your memory. R.I.P. Mate, cheers bear

Well said bear. I was not a fan even though I was a 100% Labor voter in those days and a strong union supporter. But he was no different to Rudd-Gillard; Howard-Costello; Abbot- Turmbull- Dtton-Scumo. He stabbed Bill Hayden in the back to take over and then the Hawke-Keating ego war showed all politicians ego's in reality. But he certainly was a character no doubt about it. I can remember he was giving a speech at the North Melbourne grand final breakfast and at one time had to excuse himself to take a call from Harry. Jockey Harry White with his tips for today's races. It was very funny.

Three old pub memories that I went past many times but never in any. But Sarah Sands brings back vague memories of being the firsst pub with strippers or something raunchy like that. I was too young and innocent at the time I think.
