New South Wales pensioners in public housing will pay more because of the NSW Government’s decision to discontinue the quarantining pension rises from rents. The NSW Government’s decision, announced in the September 2011 state budget, means that about 68,000 pensioners in NSW will now have more of their pension diverted to paying rent. The NSW Government’s punitive decision is very disappointing for pensioners. When the Federal government increased the pension in 2009, it asked the states and territories to quarantine the amount from rent calculations. It was intended that pension increases should stay in the pockets of pensioners, and not be partly forfeited to increased public housing rents. Now the New South Wales Government has made a deliberate decision to hit out at the most vulnerable members of the community in a most callous and inconsiderate manner. The financial position of pensioners in public housing is universally very constrained, barely permitting them to continue in a frugal lifestyle little above the poverty line. Now the New South Wales Government intends to siphon off some of the the 20 September pension increase which was intended to enable pensioners to just keep up with the increased costs of living. seniorau.com.au/index.php/more-seniorau-news/1115-nsw-public-housing-pensioners-to-pay-more
