Hi I need advice When I go overseas and I want donate some of my old phones and laptops that I have to a charity
I just remembered last time I went through customs you have to put all your laptops and mobile phones through the x ray machine
I'm going to put it on carry on instead of putting it into the plane because it might get stolen or damaged
Do you have to take out all the mobile phones and laptops and put it through the machine
Some are brand new and in a box so will they ask for me to take it out
Will I look suspicious
Is there a webpage where you can find out these things

I think it's too dangerous to send by freight in fear of they either go missing or get damaged
Maybe 5 phones maximum and one laptop and a tablet.
I don't use them and figure I rather donate it than sell it

There's a member who lives near Sydney who collects old clothes from op-shops and ships them to Philipino charities, he'd know for sure.

Carrying 5 phones and still in it's box and 2 laptops through customs in your carry on Does that make you look suspicious Giving laptops to charities is a great idea. The kids could use them for their schooling. But mobile phones, I think are not a good Idea. You are going to give them to people that have no or very little money. The first thing they need is to buy a sim card and then they need to buy load. They need to spend money on the phone, instead of buying food. If they are old phones, why are you worried about putting them in your hold luggage. I have done a lot of travelling and have never had anything stolen from my luggage. Just think, if they are stolen, then they are going to a different charity.

Maybe I don’t understand what you mean by ‘hold’. But I do know airlines only allow batteries in the plane with you, never in checked luggage which goes in the hold below.

Yes in the hold underneath or checked luggage. You have to keep the batteries with you in carryon and if you can't take the batteries out. The phone also goes in your carryon

You must take your laptop out of your carryon luggage to get scanned but I think mobiles can stay in them but not 100% sure as my mobile is always put in an open tray with my coins keys etc. I doubt they would come under any scrutiny but again only my opinion.
