A MAJOR new office block being built on a former public car park in the heart of Murwillumbah is to provide a new home for local Centrelink offices.
Construction work has begun on the $1.75million office block proposed by Murwillumbah Developments Pty Ltd on the former car park adjacent to the Come Alive Gym in Wollumbin St.
Tweed Shire Council sold the property after it built the new three-level public car park near its Murwillumbah head offices.
Yesterday Federal Labor MP for Richmond Justine Elliot said Centrelink Murwillumbah would move into "a brand new purpose built site at 107 - 113 Wollumbin St, Murwillumbah by mid-2012".
"The new service centre will offer a full range of Centrelink services in a modern, open-plan facility," she said.
"Customers will also have access to a Medicare telephone claiming service at the new service centre."
A development application approved by Tweed Shire Council allows the removal of an old highset house formerly owned by the council next to the old car park and construction of "a new multiple-tenancy office building".
The application said the office building would be divided into two tenancies with lease areas of 700m2 and 185m2 respectively.
It said: "The larger of the two tenancies will house a federal government service agency, whose development requirements have formed the basis for the building design.
"A tenant has not yet been found for the smaller space, but it is anticipated that a second service agency (federal or state) will lease the space.
"The town planning consultants for the developers said a covered pedestrian concourse at the eastern side of the building would link a car park at the rear with Wollumbin St.
The new building would be constructed with a 2.5m setback to the Wollumbin St boundary with steps and disabled access ramps.
The staff and clients of each tenancy would be provided with car parking at the rear of the site, accessed directly from Proudfoots Ln.
The consultants said the new building would "improve the visual amenity of this section of Wollumbin St".
