Hi All I am glad I found this forum. I have never posted to a forum before . I am 63 and female I have been on a DSP since 2013 and not worked since. Currently I rang CL DSP line to ask for an application for total portability There were a few questions that I didnt really answer I recall just saying "I don't know yet" I said I need the information and the form so I would need portability before making plans Then I was told they needed to put me through to International services and I started getting anxious because I had been on the phone for nearly an hpour mostly on hold. I asked for a reference number in case the phone went flat or the call dropped out . I got that and was connected to a nice lady in International. There was again a few questions on where I was thinking of going and why I again was a bit vague saying Italy or Mexico as I had family and friends there. I indicated that I would need to gain portability to make more definite plans.
I will have to wait two to three weeks for the forms to arrive and I have no real idea what happens
It's all so hidden and I felt anxious and sort of paranoid to say or not say anything
I must say that I spoke to Social Security Rights Victoria before embarking on this and called them again after reading the information they emailed to me. It is so obvious that this will take time. Its odd that I am more unwell now than when assessed but I suppose stabilised and maybe the concern is that you are stable and able to be overseas

G'day originie , welcome to the forum. In order to satisfy the requirements for Unlimited/Indefinite Portability (UP/IP) you will need to have 20 points on only one disability table (this is not mentioned in the link below), a Continuing Incapacity To Work (CITW) which will last for at least the next five years and a work capacity of 2-5 hours. Work capacity is determined in your Job Capacity Assessment, done when applying for DSP. I believe you can now get your JCA over the counter by asking for it from your local office. More info is available in the link below. Scroll down to:- "Indefinite portability of DSP - severely impaired disability support pensioner"guides.dss.gov.au/guide-social-security-law/7/1/2/10It is recommended that you apply for your file under the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) so as to appraise yourself of the information the department holds concerning your particular circumstances. A thorough reading of your file can often determine if it would in fact be worthwhile to make an application for UP. Applying is free and can be done online via email, with a sample letter and necessary information in the link below. dspoverseas.proboards.com/thread/7005/foi-denials-obfuscation One other key point at this stage is concerning your relationships with your medical professionals i.e. are your records up to date and have you had an ongoing relationship since being granted DSP in 2013. If this is not the case, now, before actually applying would be the best opportunity to consider updating them and asking your doctor whether they are willing to support your proposed application.
You may also like to investigate whether it's possible to go to an "Agreement Country", Italy is on the list; without having to apply for UP. I only mention this because many years ago whilst in an office inquiring about UP, I was told if I were going to one they could fix it up then and there. The country I wanted to go to wasn't on the list so it all became rather moot. I trust the amount of information here hasn't deterred.you in your cause and wish you.all the best whichever course of action it is you may decide to pursue. Cheers bear
Here's the link to Agreement Countries, and an excerpt from it:-

Welcome originie. Best place here for info on it all I know of as many of us have been there; done that. My best advice is the same as bear. Get your file under FOI as they are not legally required to tell you what's on it. It really is shameful but it's the law. Had I have got mine I would not be here on the forum as it took me 8 years to get UP when I was entitled to it from day one. It may well be you are eligible without any further to do. I was listed on my file as manifestly which means automatic UP. But they never told me until a lawyer got my file and in 5 minutes solved it. So do not trust Centrelink in anything they say unless it benefits you. I was told so many lies over those 8 years it really is hard for anyone else to believe. Politicians likewise, nothing but lies to cover up their original stuff up. So, all the best as when I got it, it was as good as winning lotto. I was out of jail.

I must say that I spoke to Social Security Rights Victoria before embarking on this and called them again after reading the information they emailed to me. It is so obvious that this will take time. Its odd that I am more unwell now than when assessed but I suppose stabilised and maybe the concern is that you are stable and able to be overseas Those feeling of paranoia and anxiety are very normal when applying for Indefinite Portability (I.P.) and it's also a good thing. The reality is that it is a minefield and one wrong step could not only see you not get I.P but possibly also lose DSP. However, if you follow the steps that Bear and the others have outlined you'll avoid those missteps. My advice is to spend as much time as you can going back through the threads of this forum and study how it works and learn from other people's experiences. It can be a bit overwhelming so I would recommend using the search function of the forum to read posts by a member named Genx and then branch out from there. As is often said on this forum, "forewarned is forearmed"; to go into this blindly without any research is dangerous. Like the others have said, step one is making a 'Freedom of Information' request for your Centrelink file. Once you get it, go through it and look for your Job Capacity Assessment Report. The whole thing hinges on what's written in that report.
