Unbelievable. She did cop a lot of fines, though ! $26,000 worth of fines, 60% of which were for traffic offences.....over a period of years. Wow ! A lot of that would have been the extra "processing fee" they add on if you don't pay the fine.
It was S.P.E.R. (The State Penalties Enforcement Registry) who caused her to be locked up. They claimed they tried to contact her over 100 times, but people like her are in constant denial and just switch off to government agencies hassling them. I had some of the most frustrating phone calls of my life trying to contact SPER. I was trying to call them but couldn't even get onto the phone menu.....they were always engaged. Even when you finally get to talk to someone, their inflexibility is utterly disempowering on a personal level. I've had the same experience with Centrelink's Disability and Carer's line.......over a period of years, too. On 3 occasions I gave up and called one of their other lines and asked to be transferred. Once after a long wait on the menu, being constantly told by a recorded message ......."to be patient and you will be attended to shortly".......I complained bitterly to the guy who finally answered, whereupon he hung up. If I could have reached through the phone line to wring his scrawny neck, I would have.
