And they wonder why 100s of thousands on pensions have fled overseas in recent years. A mate of mine has just moved into a new place in Thailand for 3,500 baht or about A$150.00 a month. 200 metres from a beach.

The government dropped the ball almost half a century ago when they started the privatization push on what were public assets to appease the capitalists and their unending market growth year on year to infinity mumbo jumbo. So now it is what it is folks...... "The end of the world as we know it!" Cheers 🐻

9th May the government announced an additional 190,000 migrants are due to arrive. Where will they live!!!!!!
Plus a massive amount of international students are arriving and need places.
I’m traveling around in the caravan and it’s SUPER common to see people camping who have permanent jobs locally, very very common. It’s not legal for them to stay at parks too long but I gather the park owners are turning a blind eye.
Age pensioners are camping now, divorced, widowed but alone and to be honest they are not doing it easy at all, more especially when single.
Normally families camped during holidays but it’s common to see families camping all year. They have hit the road with the kids, camp, pick up seasonal work and home school (Ive seen precious little schooling). This is a quote re home schooling figures this year. In NSW there were 8,993 children registered for home schooling in 2021, up from 4,698 in 2017. In Victoria there were 11,332 registered, up from 4,743 in 2016.
Times have changed dramatically. There will be no turning back to the old days either. Accommodation, food, power, rent, transport, vehicle expenses - it’s all over rover for hundreds of thousands from what I’m seeing. Some just don’t realise it yet.

Local government have a massive part to play in this as well.
For example - in Tassie there are numerous inconsistencies in how councils deal with approvals. We could potentially, if the council allowed it, house at least 25 family homes on 1500m2 blocks from our block, or 6 'lifestyle' blocks (our neighbours on both sides the same). Less than 200m away, 2 houses are allowed on 800m2. The council here manages the short term rental approvals.
Instead, we aren't allowed. We can only have our house. I know subdividing would make us money but it would also create housing, maybe not at the lowest level, but housing nonetheless.

Here is what my mate gets for A$150.00 a month. But even here it sounds like the bargain of the year. No, two-bedroom study/ storage lounge dining area, bar, kitchen. Very happy.

A wealthy minority who own investment properties get filthy rich at the expense of the majority of the population, and both sides of government do what best for the wealthy minority and dont care about the majority and especially the disadvataged, thats why the goeverment will do nothing to solve the housing crisis

With high inflation that has increased interest rates, rent increases on Mortgaged private properties are inevitable. There has been another hike just today in the RBA meeting by 25 basis points to quash inflation which will in turn increase mortgage rates.
As a pensioner unless you own your own home, public housing is the only affordable option.
Pensioners are better off to relocate to Thailand or the Philippines where accommodation and cost of living is a fraction of the price back home.
Cheers

Some just don’t realise it yet. Home schooling will very rarely look the same for all who do it and very rarely will look as institutional schooling looks simply because it does not work, kids are leaving high school with grades that say they pass yet they cannot spell simple words or even work out what change they should get from a single purchase. Kids usually learn a totally different way when homeschooling, book work is often done when you can't be outside or it is later at night and other kids are watching rubbish tv shows etc. There is more to it than the outsider sees I can assure you. You will often find if you speak to the homeschooling parents with no judgement and an open mind they will often share how their kids are learning and what they have found works best for them, if you speak to the kids they are nearly always much more further advanced to the same aged kids who are in mainstream schooling. Not all are doing as good as they could do and unfortunately they are the ones who seem to be thought of straight away when people not involved with Home education hear the words home schooling. Home schooling families do have to apply and also report to the education department just like normal schools but there is less forgiveness for slacking off or failures in homeschooling than there are for the system.

Air BnB is a major issue adding to the housing shortage here. In a local town where there are no empty houses (and friends and family already share homes together), a city person moved up after getting a huge inheritance from a deceased parent, they bought a few properties- one to live in and the rest to rent out at stupid prices, they kicked the long term tenants out and now the houses sit empty for all but a few weeks of the year when the school holidays are on. The previous tenants can not live at the caravan park as it is not allowed but that is the only vacant shelter which is only affordable and vacant for some of the year so most have become homeless or have been couch surfing

I never realized it was so bad back home, my experiences relate to Brisbane and Perth, but from what you say it's all over the place. Why aren't the previous tenants allowed to rent at the caravan park why not? and they end up couch surfing, shame on all those concerned. Albo will have to do something and very soon, if not he will deserve a right ear bashing !!!

The caravan park is not allowed/registered to have permanent residents is what I am told which is fairly common for many caravan parks, they also basically rely on holiday season and long weekends to keep them afloat, they charge crazy prices for holidays and long weekends as they are a fairly popular family holiday destination. These are such crazy times... I honestly never thought I would be one to reminisce on the good old days but here we are lol

I hear what you are saying mspurple, but given the situation that many people find themselves in, surely it's time for the rules to be relaxed somewhat. "We are in a crisis for heaven's sake" Many people including pensioners who have worked their finger to the bone for this country are being ridden roughshod over, it has to stop, and now not one moment later. The Government has a duty of care in looking after the interests of its people, which they are not doing at the moment. They may also be violating their human rights by not providing suitable accommodation under UN law. (Good post by the way mate ) Cheers Itsa [ii] Australia signed ICESCR in 1973 and ratified it without reservations in 1975. the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing, and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions.Oct 11, 2022
