Sometime last year after returning from Australia, I received notification from Centrelink that I may be entitled to a foreign pension as I had worked overseas for a few years, as such it was my obligation to apply. They posted the application to me on the 26th of September 2022, I received it in November, and in due course, I filled it out and returned it to back to them. On the 19th of February, I received a notification that the application had been posted by them to the recipient country R.O.I. Recently I decided to call and see how the application was progressing, to my surprise no information was forthcoming and I'd be notified in due course. This morning I decided to call Centrelink International and see if they could shed any light on the situation. In fairness, they were very helpful and said they would act on my behalf, and seek the information required. It was then my joy turned to despair as the nice lady said to me, Sir you are aware that these things take time, of course, Mam how long will it take? I'm not saying it will take this time for you, but it could take until 2025. Good people, I kid thee not from 2022-2025 that is the timeframe that I'm looking at and bear in mind that I'll have to subsist on a Part pension from Australia in the meantime. There are a few subplots in all of this which some people are aware of, but let's not cloud the main issues. I hesitate to add that I have served Australia to the best of my ability and that all my children are proud Australians also, but can someone please tell me where all this crap end... Tired and dejected Itsa

Cheer up a bit, Itsa....that timeframe is at the extreme.
With a bit of polite encouragement from you, things can progress much faster. From my own dealings with bureaucracy, they always greatly appreciate politeness and friendliness since they have to deal with so much anger and frustration on a regular basis. Even if I feel like strangling someone (which has often been the case, if the truth be told), if I force myself to be patient, friendly and polite, miracles have happened. Just remind yourself that if some bureaucrat is cranky or rude, it's really only their problem.....don't buy into it.
Stay balanced and don't let them pull you off balance. Imagine yourself as an actor.

I know nothing about foreign pensions, other than Australia benefits more from incoming foreign pensions than from outgoing Aussie pensions to expats. Least that's what I've been led to believe from the days of yore on this forum.
When it's all boiled down though, receiving a bit from here and a bit from there, I'd almost guarantee the extra if any received, will be overshadowed by dealing with not one but with two bureaucracies.
But as stated; I know nothing about the issue. Good luck with it all Itsa; cheers 🐻

I wonder if they will pay you starting from the day you applied ? In 2025, that would be a nice surprise.

I wonder if they will pay you starting from the day you applied. In 2025, that would be a nice surprise. I believe they will pay it from the date they received the application. Whenever that will be is anybody's guess and how much is a bit of a mystery also, because apparently if an employer doesn't pay your contributions, it's a case of tough luck over there... Cheers Itsa

Cheers Itsa Is it the same as England with National Insurance do you know itsa? I do know a little about England's system (something I need to sort myself in the next 3 years or so) - if that helps? Is it possible that the 2025 date is age related? Ie qualification age?

Hi tasjo I would think that their system is pretty much the same as the UK's. As for the qualification age for obtaining a pension or part thereof, I have absolutely no idea. I only became aware of all this in October last year when I reached pension age and was duly notified by Centrelink, that I may be entitled to a part pension from the R.O.I. as I had spent a few years working there, in a different lifetime. They also told me that I must apply for it as it was a requirement under social security law to do so. Centrelink sent out the application forms, I filled out the forms and they were returned to them in a matter of days, to pour over, before sending them to their counterparts in the R.O.I. As stated before in a previous post, I have no idea what's going on as I could not obtain any information at all and therefore passed the baton over to Centrelink to sort out, it was they who said that it could take that length of time to process... Cheers Itsa
