For those of you on the DSP.
When you apply for an eVisa, ETIAS, or fill out an arrival card on a plane, what do you write in the "occupation" field?
Do you write retired, DSP, unemployed? Have you ever been questioned about this or had any issues with it?

Many, many, many years ago curious80, a friend told me of a couple of his friends who had put their "occupation" on some form as 'onion pickers' for a laugh. We laughed. I generally put retired and the only time I had comment was when I departed Australia for the Philippines in 2013 and the blokes, Border Force or Customs types(??), quizzed my reason for going to The Phils and said "half my luck" at which I smiled and nodded while thinking "yeah... how lucky am I to be disabled?". Never been asked on arrival anywhere.

I always used to put 'disabled/retired', as when I had my one and only review, the Commonwealth Medical Officer (CMO) who did the review told me that if I had heard nothing back within a couple of months, to consider myself 'early retired'. That was in the Christmas New Year period of 2002-3. I was 50 y.o. at the time. Found out about the portability in 2008, which was either 3 or 6 months; though I can't recall which and started going overseas regularly. I found this forum when it was reduced to 6 weeks in 2012 and Centrelink bailed me up on it, which required some rearranging, but never ever questioned.by immigration. Cheers 🐻

Good to know thanks, i had been told to never write "Unemployed" as they may think your there for work, but was worried i was too young to get away with "retired" as im not in my 60s, but will start writing that and see how it goes. I have literally wrote things like "tourist" and "travel" previously, but i think some western countries (Europe, USA) might be more strict with that.

And bear, When I was questioned by Customs on leaving Cairns turned out to be because, around that time, there was all sorts of 'excitement' about people going for short trips overseas to pick up drugs!!! Hence when they quizzed me and I said "I'm going for the duration mate" was when they said, "half your luck"!

But I always wanted to write my occupation as 'horse breaker', or maybe 'rabbit skinner'!

I wonder why they ask the question.

I wonder why they ask the question. Because they think asking personal questions like that is part of their remit, when it isn't anything of the sort, showing them up for the nosey parkers that they are. I've always detested nosey parkers!! Cheers 🐻

I'll tell you why Denis, it's because they are all nosey gits and work for the same masters. When I was heading for the Philippines in 2015 a guy at immigration asked how long was I going for, I said oh maybe a year not sure why you asked as if I didn't know. It was then he got all flustered and blubbering away, have a nice trip. They are all connected so enough said... Cheers Itsa
