Hi. Just phoned Centrelink to tell them about my plans to take a four week overseas holiday in April.
The guy said that shouldn't be a problem, but I would need to call back a month before just to run the "portability script".
What on earth is that?

From bear's link they seem more heavy handed than I remember them being. I'd be making sure that I didn't exceed the 28 days even by 5 minutes. And nigel, as far as I know your time overseas starts when your passport is scanned 'out' and finishes when it's scanned 'in'. Have a good trip in April.

From the link provided by bear: That's interesting. What supporting documents would they want? Itinerary? My plan was simply to go to Bali, and then make my way to Vietnam. Wasn't exactly sure how yet.

I think the key words are 'may be asked' and 'documents you need to provide depend on your circumstances', i.e. whether or not you require an IP/UP review because you're planning on going for longer than allowed. Which in and of itself is an oxymoron, as if you get delayed and go over the allotted time they'll suspend payments for up to 13 weeks before cancellation and restart them when immigration tells them you've returned. Stick with your plan nigel. I don't think Indonesian Immigration will be telling BorderForce Australia that you've moved on. Cheers 🐻

If you have IP and go on holiday, just go and do not inform Centrelink. The Border Force informs Centrelink automatically.

Thanks bear . I read somewhere here that DSP recipients are now able to report travel via myGov. Maybe I should try that way? genx pardon my ignorance, but what's IP?

genx pardon my ignorance, but what's IP? Indefinite Portability of your pension. That is, the ability to go overseas at will and retain your pension payment.

It's one of the two official terms the legislation uses when & where it's suits, just as genx described nigel, Both can be found below and in the link. Cheers 🐻

nigel, I just had a thought that with all the different armed conflicts in the world they may be 'concerned' if your going near one of the places involved and checking on that for whatever reason. I would think the most they might want to see is a booking slip for somewhere in Bali and if its not for the full 4 weeks just tell them you plan to ask around for better deals... if CLink do ask.

All the armed conflicts? You are free to travel to Isreal and Ukraine, there is probably less armed conflict happening in the world now than in the last 30 yrs, it just doesn't seem like it. The major theaters of Syria Afghanistan and Iraq are all but finished. I never needed more than a phone call to tell them I was leaving and the date I returned, they only really need to know about the country you arrive in because Australia immigration loses track of you after that, after 28 days your pension will be suspended but if you return within 3 mths it is restarted on arrival in Australia. If you have UP you just tell them when you are leaving.

Alternatively, your passport records when you leave and most countries will not allow entry without a return date.
DSP would be suspended if away longer than 28 days (unless you have UP/IP) but reinstated when you re-enter Australia as long as it's within 13 weeks.
Typically that's my approach - it's so hard to get through on the phone and any time I've tried to report travel online it's been a nightmare too.

Ok. Rang them again three weeks ago, to try and officially inform them of my travel plans. Seems I gott the same guy, interestingly. Gave him the details of my travel plans.
He basically said: "Hang on while I run the portability script." Then came a long wait on the phone, with nothing but the sound of him breathing, the occasional keyboard tap, and then he finally said that it was all good to go and there shouldn't be any problems, as long as I'm back within 28 days.
I got a receipt number for the call.
He said I'd get a letter to confirm, though. Three weeks later, I still haven't got it. Is that typical?
