I'd say that the vast majority of DSP/OAP recipients who " own" property overseas would have it held in someone else's name. While having inherent risks in itself, Centrelink finding it wouldn't be one of them.

OMG signing away the house to an asian woman legally speaking your entitled to a property o/s as long as you don't have one in oz as well. The end of the day I declared mine because my logic was that I didn't know I was about to get sick when I bought it so it shouldn't be used against me when claiming the DSP turned out to be the right decision however I only scraped in by a week or so under the previous system but the principle should remain the same as home ownership under the new laws hasn't changed regarding an O/.S property Im aware that it could be used against me but my circumstances haven't changed one bit since I lodged my DSP application so I would give them hell if they tried to pull a swifty

Cl are suggesting that because i have money on fixed deposit i canot qualify for "single" status under section24 The money is well inside normal assets test limits but in this case they apply a special discrimination under the financial hardship clause You have to be destitute to be regarded as special The money is what is left from selling my property after the wife died and \i could no longer afford the payments If i buy a squat overseas i will be destitute and thus qualify??? as I will have no liquid assets Anybody know about this

I would not buy anything o/s at the moment, if I were you. They will instantly call you a non-resident.
Sorry, I am not familiar with your whole story though, too many members now, and I been caught up in my own battles lately.
I saw a house for sale near the gold coast for $57,000 the other week. Not sure if it is still there. It is on a co-op, where you only end up owning the building on it, but the land is part of a shared communal arrangement.

Agreed, buy no property outside of Australia. Not sure how money on fixed deposit would affect your single status if you're not in a relationship.

you are allowed 12 months grace to find another house after that they start to look at the interest on your account.

Lynne will get hers about a month from the time of appeal, mine was even less than that. It can take about 3 months max I think. You should have a contact at the SSAT, some one who's supposed to help you, try asking them to push it through.

No, I had to push for it, by phoning them a few times. They were a real bunch of idiots. The whole experience of being forced to return and being put through bureaucratic incompetence after returning, left me with a deep disgust for bureaucracy. Trouble is, I'm running up against bureaucrats again, applying for my wife's Migration Visa.

Mate I know what you mean The very first person i spoke to in march was insulting to my wife HE asked if the baby my wife is having is mine After four months and numerous phone call i got the line supervisor who" dealt with" my complaint She stadfastly tried to stonewalled me saying it had been dealt with .I insisted that a written apology was essential seeing as THEY always want everything in writing. Finally i got personal and I had her on the verge of tears and suddenly she understood just how it feels-- i still had to threaten to consult the ohmbudman before she gave in and sent a written apology They are bastards you get the feeling they think its their money-- tin gods keep plugging away they hate people who persevere because they know in the end we will win

Latin Dancer I have another question if I may. What if any forms did you have to fill in for centrelink when you arrived back in oz in order to have your single pension entitlement re-instated

As far as I remember I didn't. At the time I was having an Authorized Review done on the decision to reduce my payment whilst out of Australia and living with my wife. I phoned the review officer and whilst talking about that, complained that I could not even register with a job agency or get a Job Capacity Assessment because I was deemed non-resident. The situation was ridiculous, as I was in Oz and trying to look for work. I simply stated that I was staying in Oz. A little while later, she deemed me to be resident. Just keep at them, and you will also get backpaid from when you returned. I did.
