Good news, the unlimited portability amendments are now law as they were given Royal Assent on the 26th of May.
The schedule provides that the section relevant to unlimited portability commences on the 1st of July 2012 (just over four weeks from now).
I recommend anyone who wants to apply/be considered for unlimited portability contact Centrelink and notify them of their intention.

Who do you think should be contacted? International Services?

Who do you think should be contacted? International Services? This is only my own suggestion, but I would say Centrelink International. Perhaps it should be in writing and a signed acknowledgement of receipt wouldn't hurt either. You can get this if you hand it over the counter. Advise Centrelink that you want to depart Australia after the 01/07 for an indefinite period of time and you would like to know how to make an application in accordance with the requirements of s.1218AAA. That way too it is also on the record which I think is very important. On thing for certain is that Centrelink wont have their sh*t in order. Even though they are their own departments amendments, come first of July, do you really think they will have the processes in place to determine applications. I may be a pessimist on this one, but I think not.

Definitely Centrelink International.
Prior to departing in November 2011 I had several telephone conversations with C/L International and they advised doing just that when the new amendments were made law.

I also had a few convos with Centrelink International and they said to call back on the 1st July. That was a few months ago though, so maybe I should call again or write a letter. I find the folks in International very helpful and supportive.

Since the new Unlimited Portability rules have come in i have a few queries that people may or may not be able to answer. 1 . if you are granted Unlimited Portability does this mean you can come and go pretty much as you please ( Informing CL of your movements of course ,...not that they wouldnt know anyway ) and 1.2 , if granted can you stay put in Oz for however long and then move OS at a time of your choosing ( say a year or two or more ( risky i guess if the Gov changes and they change the rules again ) 2. Does the requirement to be residing in Oz 2 years before receiving the OAP become void ? Do you move onto the OAP from the DSP if living OS under the new UP scheme based on your AWL ?,.....WOW did i just say that ??!!!

Mate, I personally believe that we will be able to travel as we please, for as long as we please and when we please. Anything that would lock us into a certain system would fall into grandfathering which has never been mentioned. Subsequently we would remain residents which would keep us eligible for the OAP when we turn 65. And if it doesn't why couldn't we stay on the DSP indefinitely? Just my opinion, I have no more personal knowledge of what Centrelink WILL do than anyone else here.

G'day Rowdy,
I have a question for both myself and my brother. I am 39 years old and my brother is 37 years old could you tell me about portabilty and is it unlimited for us? I have been on DSP since 1997 and my brother about the same time.
Cheers

I'd say personally you should get it, likewise your bro, but first all of us have to do the assessment forms which have not currently been issued. On or after the 18th ring Centrelink International and give them notice of intent to apply for the unlimited portability and ask them to post you out the forms. Good luck.

They are now law, as they were given Royal Accent last week. To qualify one must have a severely impairment, which means you have 20 points minimum on ONE impairment table. You must also not be able to do any work for the next 5 years. This is the criteria that needs to be satisfied. I think the best thing to do is contact Centrelink International from Monday the 18th of June and tell them you want to apply for unlimited portability. Apparently they will then be sending out assessment forms. Unfortunately there is not much more that I can tell you apart from that. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Rowdy,
does that mean if a person has a mental illness like socail anxiety or scizotphernia then they would qualify?
Cheers
