13 weeks prior to your 65th birthday Centrelink Pensions will mail you forms to transfer to OAP if you desire to do that, if you choose to change pension portibility changes to allow you 26 weeks overseas without any changes to your payments, however you are also able to apply to live perm overseas and accept deductions to your pension rate and concessions, eg pensioners card cancelled, rent assistance cancelled, best to check with Pensions for advice before lodging forms in Feb.or before. At this stage the OAP remains unchanged as far as I know.

I'm pretty sure they lose the Pensioner supplement as well, after the 26 weeks.

I'm pretty sure they lose the Pensioner supplement as well, after the 26 weeks. Old Age Pensioners will be losing the $30 pensioner supplement, plus any rent assistance and other allowances, after only 6 weeks overseas, beginning January 2013. This is what many Seniors Groups were upset about after this was announced in the budget in May 2012.

Looking through the May budget changes, the OAP continues with unlimited portability, but the Pension Supplement ............Australian utilities component...........reduces after six weeks.
Whether this is new measure or not is not clearly stated, but since it is stated in the Budget Papers, it must be a new measure otherwise they would not state it, so it full Pension Supplement may have been previously portable for 26 weeks
The rationale would seem to be that all payments based upon Australian residence cease after six weeks.
I cannot find the reference, but if that is the rationale, then it follows that they have a case to reduce the rent allowance as well after six weeks absence..................which would be quite a blow to longer short term travelers if that is the case.
The OAP is presently $772.60 comprising Basic Rate of $712 plus pension supplement $60.60
The Pension Supplement payable after six weeks overseas reduces from $60.60 to $21.10 as I worked it out by deduction since I cannot readily find the separate component amounts.
Thus OAP after six weeks and Portable DSP payment become;
Pension; $712.00 plus Portable Pension Supplement $21.10 giving per fortnight $733.10
Corrections and/or confirmation invited.

The full Pension Supplement for OAP and DSP was previously payable for thirteen weeks of short term absences.........and is now only fully payable for six weeks.

For the rent assistance payment under the new portability rules, the nearest I could come to finding out how long it will in future be payable for temporary absences is the statement;
"Rent assistance will be payable as long as your main payment remains payable"
and since the main payment of Full Pension Supplement remains payable for six weeks only, then it follows that since the rent allowance is a parallel payment, then it also ceases after six weeks.
This Social Security legislation has so many different payments for different circumstances that it is hard to see them apart.................its a muddle.

Spot on Peter....
And,
I do not know where I saw it but basically if you go overseas for any length of time expect to lose rent supplement and the complete pension supplement.
