Well hi everyone,im a new member although not yet in the DSP,hope to be soon. Sounds strange i suppose lol
Anyway ,i would like to hear from members here how the 6 week rule has affected you? The reason i ask is that i have a friend in Pattaya Thailand and he has wife ,1 child,he now has to come back every 6 instead of 13 weeks. He cannot financially do it anymore.

I think you have answered your own question. " He cant afford it any more"
One of the reasons the Government has done it, so they have more control over the people.
Welcome to the forum.

In the UK after WW2 there were strict controls on currency leaving the country, even tourists were searched for cash before departure.
Welcome to the board billy4u, your friend has a serious problem and if he has to return to Australia he will find the cost of living prevents him from having too much spare cash to send away. He needs to look at the Unlimited Portability as an option.

Yes UP is and will be the only option. By delaying applying one is only putting off the inevitable .
Im pretty sure that the goalposts will move as always and the rules for UP will tighten in the next 2 years or so making it even more difficult. And as we all know if we are brutally honest and write down every bean spent on 6 week travel there wont be anything left over.
There is also the darker side to these new laws and that's , no money no honey as they say and its true. If you marry a Thai or any other woman and fail to provide then your time as a couple is nearing the end..

Billy4u... Love the nametag and welcome to the forum mate:) They slashed the times for exactly that reason mate; its unfortunate for most who have been affected and with wives or families.
Zorr1... No money No honey; I think its the same the world throughout and especially in our western societies even more so! How many women in Australia are willing to take us DSPers on; not many I believe, unless their like my last biatch and have ulterior motives or hangups? As we all know Zorro; were only trying to find a little bit of love in our sunset years, but the goverment in all their wisdom are even denying us that dignity! Be safe mate.... Cheetal:))

It's the beans you spend in Australia as well Zorro, any decent rental premises is over the top and the days of the airport turnarounds are gone.
I'm personally convinced Centrelink won't tolerate 5 or 6 @ 6 week trips a year.

Cheetal I might bus it to the cougar line dancing at twin towns next week and see if I can stand being around woman my own age we have to remember that no money as a westerner caries a bigger social stigma in poorer countries where we would be laughed at by locals and poor wifey would cop most of it. Banjo, the only way I can see being allowed a 6 week turn around is to spend 6 weeks back in OZ so your 6 months here and there.

That's how I had my bloody heart attack Zorro, running to the next village. Remember the story of the two bulls, one old and one young: They saw a paddock full of fertile cows and young heffers, so the young bull started to gallop forward! As he did so he asked back over his shoulder, as he saw the old bull still walking: "Why are you strolling, we need to hurry?"... To which the old bull replied, "Run if you want and F#"k a few; I will saunter up and F#;k the herd"! Be safe old mate, and its not over till the fat lady sings:)) Cheetal...

Thai wife is now in her 2nd trimester, she is going to have to go through the 3rd trimester without me being around. Will travel back to Thailand just before the birth. A very horrible situation. I am so distressed by all this. Still have to send her just about all my pension each fortnight, and live on baked beans while in Australia. Applying for partner visa so we can be together eventually.

I wish you all the best macadamianut, this is what the government has done to people on the DSP with partners and families overseas.
I assume Centrelink knows the situation so they should give you a six week portability when the birth is due, but of course you have to be able to afford it while sending her money and saving for the partner visa, which has gone up as well...
It's an absolute bastard of a situation... have you tried contacting your MP on the remote chance you may have a decent one who will try to help you?
