Good to have you here goober, you sound like you'll fit in well. It's quiet at the moment, we're marking time waiting to see what happens after the legislation changes. Check who your state Senators are in our Links and write or email them, they'll be voting on the changes to the legislation when they get back from their nice long holiday next month. Don't forget to vote in our poll, here's the link. dspoverseas.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=questions&action=display&thread=177&page=1

Hi Goober, welcome mate! I know where youre coming from.
I was doing fine looking after 3 kids and my wife here in the philippines. not living like a king as jenny macklin suggeted but just getting by. I was spending about a month or more in oz between my visits here.
these changes will destroy my family and plunge me further into poverty just so i have enough money to send my family to survive.
i really dont know where ill even get money to come back for 6mths in the year, as i will be broke just supporting them from australia.
the australian government should be held accountable for the families we are forced to leave behind. Its thier decision to change these laws when they first let us travel and have families abroad...

I am 43 on a carers allowance for my son and my 19 yr daughter is on DSP. we are wanting to do possibly 12 months in Bali to volunteer with the orangutans. we are trying to find out if anone knows if I am correct in assuming our portability is 26 weeks and does anyone know, when we return how long we have to be back in Australia before it becomes portable again? thanks for your help! All very annoying really

As far as I can see your daughter has a 13 week portability period during which she is paid the DSP followed by an unpaid 13 week period which she can still remain out of the country with the DSP payments reinstated when she returns. After 26 weeks she has to reapply on returning to Australia. The same applies for a carer and the person being cared for. www.facs.gov.au/sa/international/policy/Portability_Policy/Pages/default.aspx#5You can go back overseas as soon as you wish after returning to Australia and renewing your portability. Best to check with Centrelink, you have to tell them you're leaving anyway.

Hi all, just found this site and would just like to say hi before I begin reading all the posts. I have just turned 50 and looking at being medically retired due to a work injury this year. My Super pension will see me live comfortable with my wife and son in Thailand.
I did some light research into receiving a DSP living in Thailand and saw that after 13 weeks it is cut. Having that little extra would be good but I didn't plan on having to travel back every 3 months to keep it current. Maybe it is the only way. 1st hurdle is getting a DSP!
Any advice is warmly appreciated.

Contact them now, as the date first you first contact Centrelink is the date you will be paid from if you qualify. DSP is 'means' tested, so your rate would be reduced depending upon income and assets etc. You might not qualify for a full pension, but perhaps a part one. Currently DSP'er need to return every 13 weeks to keep their DSP. A few are getting a bit of grief at the moment as Centrelink is deeming a few of us to be non-residents. We are hopeful that the new changes that are expected to pass soon will allow greater freedoms in us not having to come back every 13 weeks to keep the DSP. Again welcome to the forum Rowdy

Thank you Rowdy, I will contact them for sure. Once my employer retires me, I'm out of here so having this sorted(If i qualify) won't keep me here nay longer than need be.

Welcome to the forum Wonder6281, you want to find out how much DSP you are entitled to and work out if it is worth the return airfares every 13 weeks. Another thing to consider is that as a new recipient Centrelink may assess you as being able to work a certain number of hours a week and make you look for a part time job.

Ty Banjo,
I have been scrolling through the DSP website and think that any benefit paid to me might be not worth having C/L in my life. My Retirement pension per fortnight is about 1700AUD and being married as well might have C/L on my tail for little compensation. As for work, my injury prevents me from driving and lifting, so I don't want to work anymore.
If they want their pound of flesh for minimal payment, then I will just bypass them altogether.
A visit is free I guess and better to know beforehand, rather than regretting it later.
Thank you for you help and this a great site and full of information. Will keep the forum updated as time goes by.
Wonder.

I would imagine a small family could live quite comfortably on $1700 a month in the Land of Smiles, while any extra income you may acquire won't have to be reported back to Big Brother. It does annoy me in one way though because by making you put this in the too hard basket Centrelink get another win. I have a mate living on about $20,000 pa super with his Australian citizen wife in northern Thailand and when I point out that he's entitled to some pension money he says he'd rather starve first.

To clarify Banjo, I will seek advice from CL, after all I have been giving the Aussie Government around $1000 in Tax every 2 weeks for many years, and my pension is fortnightly, not monthly.
I think after looking at the scales, I would be pushing 20 points to qualify for the DSP, but I won't be leaving wondering. As I said, I will update along the way.
Question is, how long does it take from application to a decision?
Further to that I think an income of 3500 per month might eat away a lot of any DSP I might qualify for. The CL visit will enlighten me for sure.

It's usually fairly quick, a guy I know recently got it through in about three weeks.

Hi there, I recently have been working part time but due to the stress at work, I don't think I can handle it and need to go back on DSP. I am planning on going overseas for a bout 6 months to be reunited with family, what will be the payment options and when do I have to notify Centrelink? You might not find it easy to get back onto DSP. Were you on it before, or has it been suspended while you were working? Let us know how that goes please. It is a very bad time to be planning a trip overseas, especially for that length of time. Centrelink will be advised as soon as you book a ticket, I would assume, once you are on a payment. You have to address the issue of getting back onto DSP first, as that will affect what travel restrictions are applied to you, according to their assessment of your ability to continue working. Also, whether Australia has an agreement with the country you plan to go to, to pay our citizens while there, would have to be looked into.
