I have just discovered this site being a newbie to the dsp and note the variety of issues confronting many of us in light of a rather dispassionate government.
Perhaps my question has been asked and answered elsewhere, but I remain a bit confused and I would appreciate your assistance.
I am a 60 yo with severe cardiovascular disease. I managed for the last 20 years to live on my capital and savings until the vagaries of the stockmarket eroded my $$ to nil! And then all my health issues kicked in andnI had to apply for dsp for which I am very grateful. I used to love to travel knowing also that Asia was always cheap and I loved the cultures.
Anyway, to the point-:
My 42 period of absence expired 20th November and accordingly my dsp has been stopped. I am currently in Malaysia. After a 90 minute wait on the phone to Centrelinks international number, I advisedbthem that I did not expect to return home until possibly the first week in January, 2015. There followed some confusing advice from the person I spoke to. Initially she advised that the 13 week suspension would apply from the date I departed (9/10/14) but later stated that it would apply from the the day of suspension of payments of the dsp on the 20/11/14.
As I am still somewhat confused, can anybody clarify when the 13 week period kicks in, ie, from the date of departure or the date my dsp is stopped/suspended. I am concerned that if I get it wrong, i will have to re-apply for the dsp which is the last thing i want to happen.
Your helpful advice/ info will be much appreciated.
Btw, I have not even got to the question of ....portability yet. It looks hell complex!,
And great work here to bango et al must be acknowleged!

From my understanding the 13 weeks suspension starts from the date you got suspended after the 6 weeks away so you would have 19 weeks all up before your payment would be cancelled.

Welcome to the forum.
The suspension of the DSP will start from the day your 42 days expired.
Unfortunately Malaysia doesn't seem to have a freecall contact number, the number they recommend for such countries is +613 6222 3455.

Can be done on a landline, I cannot see how it would work on a mobile phone.

Those landlines dont work on Skype and who has a land line when traveling ? They need to provide a normal international phone number that can be called on skype, surely they must know thats what everyone uses, google payed a billion dollars for a reason
I did have a long talk to them and if you call the 13 number it costs about $2 FOR 10MINS ON SKYPE

Hi All,I just been told that the 28 days portability legislation bill has been signed into Act now.I tried to read it online but dont really fully understand weather they suspend or cancell the DSP after the 28 days in a period of 365 days.If anyone understands that jargon please post it in layman language so we can understand what it all means, thanks to all

I have a trip planned for mid Dec , from what I understand I can still leave for the 6 weeks as per current legislation , and then can overstay for up to 13 weeks with suspended benefits before cancellation of DSP Is this correct ? Also can I leave during the year at any time once my 28 days is used and have DSP suspended for the period of my absence ?
where can I find copy of written legislation ? Is all quite confusing to me

From Thailand i dial 00199961000 which gets me to telstra in oz on my basic mobile and they will put you through to C/L international. They know the number so all you do is tell them who you want and reverse.

Centrelink will no doubt make rules out of the new legislation and we have to wait and see what they are. Probably early next year.
