Thanks Banjo,
What if I continue my present routine of in and out of the country for a maximum of 21 days, leading up to retirement in 2 years time, after which time I apply for the OAP.
What will be the restrictions on my time in, and time out of the country, to comply with the rules?
Thanks,

Maintain some kind of residence eg an address and a bank account in Australia. If it's me I spend the last 6 months living in Australia. Then if awarded I leave, assuming full portability.

Thanks, They probably don't have any cut and dried rules on this, in the past I used to say they made it up as they went along. Why don't you give Centrelink International Services a ring and ask them for an opinion, they will speak to you without you having to identify yourself.

It is possible to stay away and maintain residency, just don't stay in one place. In other words, be a jetsetter.

Yesterday I spoke to Ken Wyatt secretary and she was told that in my circumstances the portability rule wont apply. Its just for new immigrants . I now wait for a written response from him to this question..We will see..

Thanks for the input everyone, I have been overseas again and haven't had internet access, so my apologies for my late "Thank You".
I will be calling the international Centrelink people on Monday to satisfy myself that I am keeping within the rules prior to applying for the OAP in 18 months time.
To Answer a few questions from previous posts, I am not on any Centrelink benefits, am currently employed full time. Whilst overseas in Asia, I nearly got married several times but sobered up!
Thanks for the good read and very good information contained on the site

Guys, I appreciate the input, but I still can't figure out what 'portability' of the Aged Pension means. None of the above is at all helpful.

Guys, I appreciate the input, but I still can't figure out what 'portability' of the Aged Pension means. None of the above is at all helpful. Age 65 or older. You are living in Australia, receiving the Age Pension. You are an Aussie Citizen or Permanent Resident. You have not been asked to renew your residency by staying in Australian 24 months. You have 35 years of Working Life in Australia. You may leave at any time and you do not have to return. If like me you don't have 35 years of Working Life in Australia, you will lose a percentage of the pension.
