My Nonna used to make tastey Tomato and Chutney sauce on the farm. It went well with everything even on buttered toast. I'll have to see if I can source the recipes.
Cheers.

Ohh ok, never heard of that! We always have a lot of butternut pumpkins... we eat them and my birds love to chew them up and eat some of them too and we also use them for feeding our worm farms if we need to so we grow a fair whack of them usually, just have to remember to turn them over at least once a week and they last a long time.

They are just an extender/filler in case you don't have enough tomatoes and they have a reasonably high water content to match tomatoes. www.myfrugalhome.com/pumpkin-tomato-sauce/Load it up with chillies and the horses will be bolting out the gate... lol

Not a fan of pumpkin, wont touch it in the flesh. I'll eat pumpkin soup but will not pay for it.
Years ago one of our members (who had managed a Michelin starred restaurant in the UK... we have everyone here) invited me to his flat for dinner. Served with the meal were baby squash of which I'm not a fan either but ate them to be polite... I think they were one of the most delicious veggies I've ever eaten! So a lot lies in the hands of the cook!

just a tip on pumpkins. how many of us grew up with peeling and cutting out the seeds? Turns out that is a total waste of effort as those are the healthiest parts. Now been eating all of it for years and don't even notice them. just heard it again on the radio last week. Likewise the skin and apple core. Eat the lot. PS. My favourite veggie by far banjo. But then again, you know I have no taste as an instant coffee person.

The last 6 months i've been just having wholemeal sandwhiches (i've lost a stack of weight aswel thru this diet). This morning I treated myself to Steamed chicken dumplings served with garlic rice, wow talk about satisfying when I don't usually eat that sort of stuff. Only P45 Pesos for a serving! I couldn't believe it! Will be going back there again!
Cheers

But then again, you know I have no taste as an instant coffee person. You can salt and roast the seeds also for a nice yummy snack. My bird loves the seeds fresh from the pumpkin but he does not get them all as I save a heap for planting. There are so many foods we have no clue about (cos its not sold in supermarkets) and we pull them out of gardens thinking they are just weeds- stinging nettles, marshmallow, purslane and dandelions are all very common, good for us, easy to grow and regularly removed from gardens for being undesirable weeds... lol they are all delicious if you know how to prepare/cook them. Seems many people are now embracing alternative (or older ways) of finding sustainable or wasted food sources, many are now foraging in the city (I discovered the city foragers after seeing an account on Instagram) for edible weeds and native foods.

Where the locals eat their lunch are the best places, always busy with food cooked fresh every morning. Cheap, nutritious and filling.

mspurpleThe Italians are the best at knowing road-side food. And if you want a real 'wild horse sauce' I'd suggest checking out Italian sauce recipes.
