hi lynne, yep good idea to have some sort of address as proof of residency as they will look for any reason to avoid the being a resident.?i have a room that i rent,my brother lives up the road,my mum is buried 500 mtrs up the road with my other brother so of course this is my home what else can i say.i dont have no overseas bank accnts ect. i just go there say 9 months a year but still maintain my ties with aust enough to prove it to them that we are residents,ok so where is the doted line of resident or non resident ??

True. I will and have always been straight with them. My fear has always been caught on some stupid technically for a few piddly dollars. Now I have to keep looking ahead and make the best of the situation until July 1. The station is 85 miles out of Alice - no mobile access there but they have WIFI! Yay I can keep in contact and not lose the thread. The offer for me has come as a god send because of the financial aspect of keeping the home fires burning and rice in the pot......

Hi Lynne I would use the address near Alice Springs as your Australian residential address. Don't claim rent assistance, since you won't be paying it anyway. It is illegal to claim rent assistance and not be living in the place, but to not claim it, and be away on holidays often, is not. As long as your mail is kept for you, and not returned to sender, then it is your permanent residence when in Australia. Good Advice. There is no rule whatsoever that says you have to be paying rent for your permanent residential address. Anything in writing stating that you have a permanent residential address is good. Good luck Lynne.

What would the situation be if we saved and went on a short term trip, say a couple of weeks? OK, they stop your pension when you leave but would it be reinstated automatically on return or would you be in position of having to reapply?

Hi Banjo I asked the same question in a letter I emailed off to Centrelink. I asked what is in place should there be a medical emergency and we have to return. Many of us having families over there so I am going to be very interested to see what they pull out of the rabbits hat.

....hee hee banjo/ Quote above. if we saved and went on a short term trip,... they would probably reduce the pension .......if we can save then they would think they are overpaying us.

The next few weeks will be interesting whilst Centrelink beagle boys deduce the ifs and what fors of residency status. Thought they would have had that sorted when they changed the policies or do they hang about the tea rooms waiting to see what we throw back. We all need to be vigilant in watching for any new press releases. Come on everyone! Don't leave it to the dedicated few. We're all in the same boat so pick up your paddle (mouse) and start rowing (searching)

RE: Do we have to reapply if we left on a holiday. How many of us are under 26 portability? 13 weeks paid and 133 weeks unpaid. Does that still stand?

I have a block of land in FNQ. There is a shop next door. Put a cheap caravan or a cardboard box on it, and you have a permanant residence. No rent required, you get squatters rights.

anotherdsp: I DOUBT THEY KNOW WHAT THE NEXT STEP IS THEMSELVES IN REGARDS TO OUR PORTABILITY STATUS. IT MUST BE EMBARRASSING FOR THE STAFF WHEN THEY ARE KEPT IN THE DARK BUT SOMEONE ON DSP CAN SPROUT VERBATIM THE LATEST LEGISLATION AND POLICIES UNDER REVIEW. IT IS IMPORTANT WE ALL KEEP OUR EYES AND AND EARS OPEN. NOT THAT IS MUCH COMFORT BUT I THINK WE ARE CAUSING THEM A LOT OF GRIEF, ESPECIALLY IF WE CAN PARROT OFF POLICIES. I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR FEELINGS RE WANTING TO RETURN TO THE BANANA REPUBLIC AND THOUGH IT IS EASY TO BECOME DISPIRITED WE HAVE TO SOLDIER ON AND KEEP FOCUSED FOR JUNE 31. i AM HOPING THEY WILL GET FED WITH US AND DECIDE THEY ARE UNDERPAID TO DEAL WITH US AND START SIGNING US OFF. WHEN DEALING WITH A REVIEW OFFICER BE POLITE, SPEAK SLOWLY THINK ABOUT THE QUESTION THEY ARE ASKING YOU AND IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND 100% ASK THEM TO EXPLAIN IT IN LAYMANS TERMS.... THINK YOU MAY FIND THEY CAN NOT. ITS CHOOK LOTTO. PICK A B OR C. WE JUST HAVE TO ACCEPT OUR SITUATION FOR THE MOMENT AND HEY IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE IN AS MUCH WE HAVE TO REMAIN FOR 13 WEEKS 6 MONTHS AND SOME INSTANCES 2 YEARS. I AWAIT WITH ABATED BREATH FOR THE RESPONSE FROM CENTRELINK RE THESE ISSUES -
