Hi, I'm hoping someone can give me an idea or an answer to these questions and it also may help other Aussie DSP'ers who are looking at doing the same thing. I'm wanting to know what type of Visa/Immigration options people know of that us DSP'ers are eligible for so we can live permanently (or a visa that is easy to extend) in certain countries in Asia. I'm specifically looking at the following countries....Indonesia (Bali specifically) and Thailand. I am in my early 30's so not of pension age yet. What is the easiest long term visa to get for these countries and the process (like, do you need to apply for it in Australia, or can you apply for it when you get in the country?). And what other visas have other people received that allows them to live long term there? Oh, marrying someone is not an option for me, lol. I have a partner

Welcome to the board ntc3. I'm not sure about Indonesia but Thailand offers a number of visas options. What I suggest is that you go to their Australian Embassy sites and read the visa pages. canberra.thaiembassy.org/visa.htmlwww.indonesia.embassy.gov.au/jakt/home.htmlNone of these will be particularly easy, many countries are becoming increasingly reluctant to allow foreigners to live on their soil with "visas" rather than residency qualifications.

To answer your question in part.
Cambodia is the Country in S.E.A. that has the easy visa.
Thailand is getting more difficult all the time.
I had lunch last week with a high ranking Thai Immigration Police officer and he made this comment.
" Two problems Thailand has is 1... Too many foreigners living in Thailand" the word living meaning long term visas.
2. They have a big problem with too many illegal hand guns in Thailand

Thailand is easy to stay long term. All you need is an education visa. Enroll in an accredited Thai language school and they will help you process the Visa. You will have to report to immigration every three months but you will be able to stay for a year at a time.

The other option is to mail your passport to the thai consular in Brisbane, they are the only one that do a 12 month multi entry from what I understand. I use them and you can also mail your passport from Thailand to them but thats one I will have to follow up on

I'd be very careful sending your passport out of Thailand for visa purposes while you remain in the country yourself. I seem to remember people getting into huge amounts of trouble doing this about ten years ago. I can't seem to think of a single Thai visa renewal that doesn't involve either leaving the country or visiting Thai immigration. Just because the Thais smile a lot doesn't mean they have any sense of humour where their visas are concerned. ntc3, try this forum, a lot of the staff are well informed even though a large percentage of the members are tossers. www.thaivisa.com/forum/

Im referring to secure mail to Brisbane. I cant see a problem there and the 12 monther is just to convenient.

I am legally married in Philippines and not with her now but still find it hard and expensive to get permanent residency here.

thanks for all the links guys, i had a look at cambodia immigration laws and it's true that it's ridiculously easy to stay there long term. indonesia is so hard though unless you're over 55....but i'm going to keep looking!
