I'm somewhat belatedly setting up this board the allow new members to introduce themselves and maybe tell their DSP story. A few words about how you found our forum would be useful, we've put a bit of time into spreading the word about it and it would be handy to know what works and what doesn't. Banjo (Taking credit for another of Banker's ideas ). Oh, any old members who want to introduce themselves, feel free.

After my family informed me of the March 2010 press release of proposed legislation changes I stumbled onto this site after hearing about it on thaivisa.com whilst searching for more information about the changes. I still consider myself an Australian resident although I tend to travel more often then not. Not sure where centrelink consider me to be resident. I know I have no official residence in asia. Banker is the member in charge of promotions and advertising, a guy who is now on the OAP and previously grandfathered to pre2004 legislation so unaffected by the changes but not blinded by the way the Aus government poorly treats its weakest citizens. Banjo and Lord Byron seem to be the guys on this forum that know the legals of centrelink however i am learning and would be happy to offer advice to any members here. We are all friends here and we all want the same thing. To be treated as an equal, with dignity. If we are here in Thailand or any other Asian country on a Non Immigrant Visa (be it tourist, business, retirement, marriage), we are obviously Non Residents or in Thailand's situation we are not Thai Citizens (unless you have gone down that road); Stating the obvious I know..but how can Centrelink, then consider us Non residents of Australia..it just does not equate! We DSPers are Australian citizens who live temporarily overseas and whilst we hold a valid Australian Passport we are deemed to be Australian Citizens, (an Immigration matter). Australian Immigration do not care where we live as long as our Passports are valid for departure and re-entry. As mentioned before Centrelinks' Policy seems to be the 'bluff' hand in this hang 'em high poker game we are all sitting in on. Anyone know how far did the 2nd Reading of the Amendment Bill get? News was the Opposition were going to oppose it anyway, just to nark the governemt..I don't think any of them will 'cross the floor' on this one! What with end of Parliamentary Session for 2010 and Christmas New Year break, the Bill may not get back before the House until mid February 2011. Just my two bobs worth, any feedback appreciated. ROD.

Rod, I have been fighting C/L about this Residency thing since 2002, you can get more info on the thread "Australian Residency" I still refuse to be called a non resident. When I had to fill in a form about 2 months ago to change from DSP to OAP on that form they had me as being a resident of Thailand yet I live in Cambodia ? They are bloody hopeless. On that form I crossed out Thailand and wrote in Red ink that I was a resident of Australia. Like I have said before this residency is only C/L policy not law and they do it to have more control over us and to deny us of any benefits. I have not had any access to Medicare or other concessions since 2002. Cheers. Banker

When I got busted for overstaying last year one of the key things Centrelink was interested in was the type of visa I used in Thailand. When they saw my Non-Im B it was almost as if they were disappointed. They never at any stage tried to make a case that this "proved" I was working in Thailand. (Which I'm not and never have done, I'm merely an unpaid company representative). Off topic Banker, do you have medical/hospital insurance outside of Australia?

Hi, I am SpaceyOne, living up around the gold coast.
Actually my children and I are currently homeless and staying with various friends after Centrelink put me on the dole when I had two slipped discs in my lower back, and was unable to work to support us.
Long story, but I had to fight those idiots for four months solid to be put on disability instead.
I encountered various corrupt staff members, who count on other departments to act corruptly to cover up the first one's corruptness. I now find it hard to believe that Centrelink has any honest or moral employees at all, but I guess there are a few.
I have threatened them with the ICAC, the Ombudsman and even the Federal Court. But they don't back down, they just keep playing games with your life, your health, your income and your rights.
It will take all of the two years of my disability pension to recover from the process of applying for it in the first place.
If I can give any advice on their dirty tricks and how to play their own games back at them, feel free to ask.
