Hi guys, a question. I was initially on DSP in the 90s for a short while and then through marriage, had to come off it. As my marriage has now ended , I have started to receive it again. My question is, should my case be considered under the guidelines that were prevalent in the 90s or the present day guidelines and restrictions on travel? Thanks for any replies.

If you came off it completely you will be under the new rules......What ever they may be as C/L change them when ever they feel like it.

You could always ask them, ring Centrelink International about travel for instance. Centrelink don't stand to gain much by messing you around, they'll just say yes or no and if you're not satisfied with their decision get back to us or give Welfare Rights a ring.

Hi wow cant believe I found the perfect site after a bit of googling. Im currently living in Thailand have bought a condo and have a fiancee. Up until 12 months ago I was self employed and was able to move freely between oz and BKK.
However I can no longer work due to severe peripheral neuropathy so will now head back to oz so the doctors there can verify and apply for DSP.
2 questions.
When applying for DSP, from walking in the front door how long does the process take before its complete and I can leave back to thailand?
Im aware of the 13 week rule however Im confused about the new 26 week rule. Will the 26 week rule come into affect if at all?
thanks and Hi all zorro

Welcome to the board.
The normal wait for the DSP is 6 weeks. You have to be in Australia to apply. There could be some consternation when you tell them you intend living in Thailand. As a new DSP recipient you may find you have to stay in Australia while they try to find you part time work, make sure that you have your disability and your inability to work well documented.
I'm not sure what you mean by the 26 week rule, portability for DSP recipients is currently 13 weeks. I showed you the media release in another post, none of us are too sure what it will mean regarding portability. I'm currently busy with personal problems caused by the portability rules which I hope to have sorted very soon. I intend writing to Minister Macklin and asking for further clarification and will do so when i get organised, Feel free to do so yourself, your own MP may have some information as well.

Thanks for the response Banjo. By 26 weeks I meant the portability rules. so 13 weeks in and out is okay for now? Im confused as im sure many are "There could be some consternation when you tell them you intend living in Thailand" Thought that as long as Im in and out in 13 weeks it wouldn't matter where I lived? again confused. They really screw ozzies around. many expats in BKK from all over the world living happily on their pensions except us. I will certainly tell my DSP story here when it happens p.s Banjo when you said 6 weeks does that mean I have to be there for 6 weeks? or after successfully applying it will take 6 weeks for payment. thanks for your help, great Forum cheers

Be careful with that bit of information. That could have Centrelink class you as a resident of Thailand so you would need to be a returned resident to claim a DSP. Then you would have a 2 year waiting period before the DSP is portable. The first thing you would need to do is prove your residency. Centrelink will have access to department of Immigration records showing you departures from Australia. Thanks RTD. while I have been away all my mail is sent to my sons address. this will also be my permanent "residence"

Welcome to the board.
As Banjo stated you can leaver the country for 13 weeks. Return but am not sure for how long as the rules are changing.
You will need to prove you are first a resident of OZ with a place to live, or stay and have family ties.
Spacey is the wiz, but all the rules and all mixed up depends on who you talk too at C/L.
All the best on your application for DSP, when you apply.
Bedwin
